The second generation of entrepreneurs is ready to receive tourists

The second generation of entrepreneurs is ready to receive tourists.

On July 5, the second generation of entrepreneurs of Caminos de Osa graduated. With the inclusion of 19 businesses, the routes of the destination have benefited with a larger variety of activities and options for the tourists, and at the same time the entrepreneurs will have more tools to offer better services and create their businesses.

The training program had a duration of six months and was lead by RBA, the CRUSA Foundation, the Osa-Golfito Initiative (INOGO), and SINAC with the support of the mentors and organizations allied with Caminos de Osa.

The participants of the process highlighted that the principal lesson was working as a team. “Learning how to work in unity, all together, has been the biggest achievement to reach any goal, if we work as a team now, we know what can be accomplished” pointed out Yolanda Rodriguez, one of the entrepreneurs who concluded this process.

We congratulate all of those who were part of this project. Now 39 businesses form part of Caminos de Osa, impacting 155 people directly, and linking the local businesses to strengthen the territory and protect the most biologically intense area of the plant.

The second generation of Caminos de Osa is now waiting for you to walk the Osa Peninsula together.

We are initiating the tour guide training program

Caminos de Osa has to be experienced from all points of view. On this occasion, it focused on the tour guides’ perspectives, who participated in the program where they were trained to become experts in the routes of Osa and its history.

The cultural component of Caminos de Osa was partly fundamental to this training program. That way the guides won’t only place a high value on the ecological aspect of the area, but also on the history and people who reside there.

This program also has the objective of improving as a destination. Thanks to the visit of experienced guides, we learned more about our routes and highlighted more opportunities to continue improving.

Meeting of the entrepreneurs of Caminos de Osa

The first and second generation of entrepreneurs of Caminos de Osa went through the most recent training program together. The routes integrate 39 distinct businesses in the area, but despite the differences between each one, after sharing experiences, we found out that there were more similarities than we originally believed.

The testimonials of the first generation served as en example for the rest of the entrepreneurs who keep working on their projects. On the other hand, the second generation spread the momentum and energy to those who have been working as a part of Caminos de Osa for a while. Most importantly, the team continues to grow and work together to develop the region.

¿What do you think?
That was our challenge for the assistants of TEDx Joven Pura Vida 2016. We get a lot of different answers, but all full of creativity, in that way they complete our alphabet, letter by letter. Here we share with you the results.

Caminos de Osa surprises at Tedx Pura Vida Joven 2016

We were present at Tedx Pura Vida Joven 2016, with the talk “the true color of gold is green”. Daniel Villafranca of RBA, the lead company of the project, had the challenge of speaking about Caminos de Osa, its creation, and its work model with a 10-minute presentation in front of all 3,000 spectators who attended.

Osa contains a natural treasure, which includes the wonderful people that reside there. However, the opportunities available for the population to prosper socially and economically in the protected areas are slim. That is why Caminos de Osa was created; where tourism is an adventure that becomes a tool for the workers of the area to improve their living conditions.

The TedX talk highlighted the importance of this project for the population with the story of Mr. Juan Cubillo, a native of Osa who decided to utilize his knowledge and experience to become an entrepreneur. Mr. Juan, travelled all the way from Osa to the event to invite all people who were present to live the Caminos de Osa experience and help the workers of the area.

Students majoring in interior space design boost small entrepreneurs in Osa

35 tourist entrepreneurs received support in the design of their ventures as a part of the project “Caminos de Osa”

Students majoring in the career of interior space design at VERITAS University, career accredited by SINAES since 2008, helped 35 entrepreneurs in the Osa Peninsula through a program called “Caminos de Osa”, students proposed in areas like lightening, infrastructure, conditioning and organization so that the small business owners could get the certification from the Instituto Costarricense de Turismo (ICT).

Ylenda Madriz is a Student from Universidad VERITAS who is now participating in this project. She is going to be helping the entrepreneurial families from the community to create a network of sustainable tourist destinations, with a conservationist mentality. The final goal is to build trails that help national and international tourists explore and get to know better the natural abundance the place has to offer.

The first part was developed by the students as part of their final project, with three courses of the degree in interior design, where they expect the recovery of the heritage region and the redesign of the social areas like restaurants, lobby, common areas, cabins and others. The second phase of the project will begin in August where they plan to give a follow-up to the defined proposals and at the same time giving support to the small entrepreneurs in the region.

“We consider important the intervention because it helped us demystify some of the profession perspectives and humanize the practice of design. Caminos de Osa has helped with the recovery of the career’s focus by searching a contribution to society and achieve an impact in the student’s vision, where they highlighted the huge effort of the entrepreneurs in the area” said Jennifer Cob, coordinator of the intern space design career.

"In SINAES we support any initiative that help the fundamental development and professional enrichment with tools that help boost their abilities and promote the entrepreneur spirit" said Alvaro Cedeño, president of Consejo Nacional del SINAES.

1st Generation of Entrepreneurs Graduation

On June 26th in the La Palma Community Hall, 23 rural tourism entrepreneurs from the Osa Peninsula received their graduation diplomas after successfully completing the "Personal and Tourism Service Development for Rural Tourism Entrepreneurs Program". This process has been carried out since May 2014 by RBA, CRUSA Foundation, Osa-Golfito Initiative (INOGO), and the National Conservation Areas System (SINAC), with the unconditional support of our mentors and other allied organizations

These tourism entrepreneurs have changed their lives to become local promoters and defenders of the local natural capital. While in the beginning they were desperate and destitute, barely making a living and without a clear future, today they are brave and committed role models. You can read some of their stories at Juan CubilloRocío Vargas and Mario Torres.

This first generation of entrepreneurs will continue to support and develop the sustainable rural tourism destination Caminos de Osa. Its visitors will travel through tourist trails made by the local people, where they will experience a journey through the world's most biologically diverse place.

The graduation ceremony started with the words of RBA's CEO, Daniel Villafranca, who highlighted the immense effort and commitment of the entrepreneurs and every entity that supported the project. The other attendees at the main table - William H. Durham from INOGO; Geiner Alvarado from CRUSA; Ms. Ana Helena Chacon, Vice-President of Costa Rica; and Ms. Patricia Madrigal, Vice-Minister of the Environment - also extended recognition and congratulations to the recent graduates.

Caminos de Osa's newest ally: Veritas University

In a collaboration that benefited both parties, several Osa entrepreneurs improved their business venues with the help of university students, while the students obtained practical experience as they contributed to the economic improvement of the Osa region.

On March 26th, 32 interior design students submitted proposals to improve ten businesses in the Playa Blanca, Rancho Quemado and El Progreso communities. Said proposals were developed after the students took part in a tour to meet the entrepreneurs during the first week of February.

Additionally, several advertising and product design students are currently completing their required University Community Work hours for Caminos de Osa. The former are creating promotional materials for the project such as logos, menus, brochures, signs, and others; while the latter propose structural improvements for the businesses. This segment of the project included a visit to the 13 businesses that needed the most guidance in these areas.
